It sails along the downtown skyline, past the USS Midway and the North Island naval station. Sea lions are often seen, dolphins now and then.

Seven sunset sails compared

All seven are small boats, six guests or fewer except one private boat for twelve. Most leave Harbor Island, across from the airport, or Shelter Island.

When the sun sets in San Diego

The sun sets as early as 4:42 pm in early December and as late as 8:00 pm at the end of June. On October 20, 2026 it set at 6:09 pm, and after the clocks go back on November 1 it drops to about 4:58 pm. Sunset departures move with it, so check the start time on the calendar rather than assuming one. Cerulean Sea Charters, for example, runs its sunset charters from 5 to 7 pm between April and October and from 3 to 5 pm between October and March.

One warning for late spring. A low marine layer often covers the coast in May and June, which locals call May Gray and June Gloom, and on those evenings the sunset itself can stay hidden. The skyline and the sail are still there.

San Diego Sailing Experiences is the simple pick: two hours, a comfortable sailing yacht, wine on board and food of your choice. The company sails daily and says it can usually find a slot if you do not see the date you want. For six friends, reserving all six seats costs $594 at the from price and puts only your group and the captain on board.

Fun Cat Sailing Adventures sails a wide two-hull catamaran that does not heel, tip or lean like a traditional sailboat, which suits first-time sailors. You can sit on the bow nets with your feet over the water. Jackets are not supplied, so bring one.

Sea Monkey Adventures takes up to twelve on a private sail between downtown and Coronado, with blankets, cookies, chips, juice and sparkling water. Alcohol and red wine are not allowed, and marina parking is $16 per car for two to three hours.

The other four, in a sentence or two

Sail Liberty is the classic boat: a replica of a 1904 gaff-rigged Friendship sloop with fine woodwork and bronze fittings. It sails past the USS Midway, the Star of India and the Coronado Bridge, and you can learn how to sail her. See the Liberty sail.

Sail San Diego runs morning, day and sunset sails on a 40-foot yacht and may sail out into the Pacific. Check in at its Shelter Island office 30 minutes early; it has no parking lot of its own. See the Sail San Diego trip.

Luna, Spectacular San Diego Sailing’s 35-foot sailboat, lets you help sail; it does not take children under 10, and with one review it is too new to judge. See the Luna sail.

Carolina is a cruiser, not a sailboat: a 28-foot Koehlerkraft with bow and aft sundecks, a charcuterie board and room for six, and you can bring your own drinks, glass bottles included. It has no reviews yet. See the Carolina cruise.

Will you see whales on a sunset sail?

Usually not. These boats stay mostly in the bay, and whales feed offshore. Sail San Diego says you may see whales depending on the time of year, and Luna’s crew watches for dolphins, sea lions “and maybe even a whale”, but neither is a whale trip. If you want whales and a sunset in one outing, San Diego Whale Watch runs sunset whale trips from Mission Bay; on October 15, 2026 its sunset trip logged 11 humpbacks. Check whether a late departure shows on its calendar. Otherwise take a whale boat in the day: our San Diego whale watching tours compared covers all seven. For a private boat on the bay instead, see our private yacht charter guide.

Before you book

  • Layers. It is often cooler on the water than on land; bring a jacket even in summer.
  • Shoes. Wear soft, flat shoes; Sail Liberty bans high heels, and Sail San Diego asks for soles that are not black.
  • Drinks. Several boats ban red wine, and Sea Monkey bans alcohol; Carolina and Luna welcome your own.
  • Tips. Gratuities are extra on every boat here; Spectacular San Diego Sailing suggests 20 percent.
  • Cancellation. All seven can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead.
