Private Yacht Charter in San Diego: What It Costs, the Rules, and the Whale Question

Private yacht charter in San Diego from $795 per group of up to 12, as of October 2026. Bay and coast trips, not whale trips, and what to book for whales.

Updated October 2026

A private yacht charter in San Diego costs from $795 per group of up to 12 for 2.5 hours, or from $964 per group of up to 6 on a 45-foot yacht, as of October 2026, and both are bay and coastline cruises: none of the private charters here is a whale-watching trip, and none promises whales. If privacy is the point, book a charter. If whales are the point, book a whale boat.

Prices, ratings and review counts as of October 2026; operators change prices, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.

The cheapest way to have a boat to yourselves is to buy every seat on a small shared sail. At the from price, six seats come to $594 with San Diego Sailing Experiences and $750 on the Liberty. A true charter costs more and gives more: Cerulean’s yacht has two bathrooms with freshwater showers, a galley with a stovetop, and a toast of champagne, wine or a six-pack of beer. You can anchor for a swim, with floatables and Polaroid photos as options. Sea Monkey Adventures is the choice for seven to twelve people, with blankets, soft drinks and snacks on board.

The best private boat charter companies in San Diego

By reviews, the strongest small-boat operators in our list are San Diego Sailing Experiences (4.9 from 187), Sail Liberty (4.9 from 55), Fun Cat Sailing Adventures (5.0 from 48) and Sail San Diego (4.9 from 27). These sell seats on boats that take six; San Diego Sailing Experiences and Sail Liberty say that booking all six makes the sail private. The whole-boat charters, Cerulean Sea Charters and Sea Monkey Adventures, have one review or none yet, so reviews cannot vouch for them. Our San Diego sunset sail guide compares the six-seat boats in detail.

Will you see whales on a private charter?

Probably not, and nobody promises it. Cerulean cruises the shoreline. Sea Monkey’s morning sail crosses the calm bay to the seals at Point Loma, and its sunset sail runs between downtown and Coronado. Sail San Diego may head out into the Pacific, and you may see whales “depending on the time of year”, but it says plainly that it is not a guided tour. Whales feed offshore, beyond the bay, where the whale boats go.

Private whale watching in San Diego: the two real options

Book all six seats on the Zodiac. Netzero Expeditions runs a three-hour whale and dolphin speedboat trip from the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina, with a U.S. Coast Guard captain, marine biologist commentary and port tax included. It takes six passengers, so six seats is the whole boat: from $1,134 for six at the from price of $189 per person, as of October 2026. Before you book, ask Netzero Expeditions whether it will run your group alone. It lists no whale guarantee and is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or non-swimmers. Rated 4.2 from 14 reviews. See the Zodiac trip.

Go private in Monterey. Sail Monterey’s private whale watching and sailing trip takes up to six people for 3.5 hours on Monterey Bay, from $950 per group of up to 6, rated 4.9 from 6 reviews. Sightings are not guaranteed. It suits a coast road trip; see the best places for whale watching in California.

If comfort matters more than privacy, the Peregrine from Point Loma is the shared boat built for it: air-conditioned indoor seating, stabilizers and a whale sighting guarantee, from $75 per person. The homepage explains why.

What is the 12 person rule on a yacht?

In US waters it comes from federal law. A boat under 100 gross tons that carries paying passengers without a Coast Guard inspection may take no more than six, and the same limit applies when it is chartered with a crew the owner supplies. That is the “six-pack”: the Coast Guard lists the captain’s licence for these boats as “OUPV (6-pack)”. When a boat is chartered bareboat, with no crew from the owner, the limit is 12. Above those numbers it counts as a small passenger vessel, which the Coast Guard must inspect. It explains the numbers here: Cerulean takes six, and Sea Monkey Adventures, which takes up to 12, lists a $125 bareboat charter captain fee inside its price. On large yachts abroad, 12 guests is also the usual ceiling, because international safety rules treat a vessel carrying more than 12 passengers as a passenger ship.

How much to tip on a private yacht charter?

Plan on 10 to 20 percent of the charter price for the captain. Sea Monkey Adventures suggests 10 to 20 percent, Spectacular San Diego Sailing says 20 percent is appreciated, and Fun Cat Sailing Adventures says to tip as you would at a restaurant. On a $795 charter that is about $80 to $160. For large crewed yachts, the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association’s guideline is 5 to 15 percent of the charter fee.

Before you book

  • Sunset times. Cerulean’s sunset charters run 5 to 7 pm from April to October and 3 to 5 pm from October to March.
  • Getting there. Sea Monkey Adventures meets at 955 Harbor Island Drive; marina parking is $16 per car for two to three hours. Cerulean departs and returns to its marina, so confirm the dock when you book.
  • Drinks. Sea Monkey’s sails ban alcohol and red wine; Cerulean includes its toast.
  • Seasickness and access. Cerulean is not suitable for people prone to seasickness, and Sea Monkey’s boats are not wheelchair accessible.
  • Cancellation. All of these can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead.
